Religion in India is an important issue.
80% of Indians are Hindu.
The Hindu religion has 330 million Gods and Godesses. There is a God or Godess for just about everything. The three main Gods are Shiva, Ram and Vishnu. The most popular God is Ganesh, the elephant headed God of Prosperity. Ganesh figures are given as gifts when someone gets married, has a birthday or moves into a new home.
The main Hindu festivals in India are Diwali and Holi.
The Hindus believe in reincarnation and the cow is sacred.
17% of Indians are Muslim – about 180 million. This means that more Muslims live in India than Pakistan and India has the World’s second largest Muslim population after Indonesia.
India is a secular country – any religion is welcome and accepted.
